Check Engine Light (Malfunction Indicator Light)

The check engine light on your dashboard looks like a small, orange or yellow automobile engine. Most people think that its illumination means that it is time for a tune-up. Today’s cars have what is called an onboard diagnostic system (OBDS) that is part of the engine management system. This system has, defined within it, several thousand individual codes, each representing a single type of malfunction. So, a single check engine light can signify any one or more of these codes. The check engine light can indicate problems with basic engine functions such as ignition, fuel injection and sensor health, to exhaust and evaporative emissions malfunctions. Many of these problems will not affect drivability nor harm the engine, but some are more serious. Whenever the light is illuminated, ASR will read the codes from your ODB system at no charge. This initial reading will allow us to discuss with you the severity of the problem, begin the diagnosis process and let you know if it is still safe to operate your car.
